If you are turn off Desktop & Documents: Add your Desktop and Documents files to iCloud Drive - Apple Support. When you turn off Desktop and Documents, your files stay in iCloud Drive and a new folder is created on your Mac.

To hide desktop icons with a Keyboard shortcut, all you need to do is to download the freely available Camouflage application for MAC. This application is as small as 473KB which gets installed in your MAC and now with it’s help you can hide your desktop icons with a single Keyboard shortcut.
